VOTE GREEN, VOTE:

JEFFRIES

Representing the community in Headingley

  • Headingley resident since 1980

  • Ex-Chair of Governors of Headingley Primary School
  • Chair of the Headingley Network Community Association since 2001 – the Network has a membership of 250 families and campaigns to recreate a balanced community in Headingley
  • Challenged licence and planning applications that do not contribute to the well-being of a mixed and thriving community
  • In 2001 helped to initiate the enormously successful annual Celebrate Headingley festival which highlights the many positive sides of our neighbourhood
  • Member of the Central Headingley Strategy Group – which developed the “Headingley Renaissance” document to guide future planning decisions
  • Chair of the Lounge Action Group responding to the closure and redevelopment of the Lounge (and Cottage Road) Cinema
  • Founder member of the Headingley Development Trust – which will use social enterprise to reinvest profits from local businesses back into the community – its first project is expected to be reclaiming Headingley Primary School buildings for community use

I have found it inspiring to work alongside members of the community and community organisations to create a vision of Headingley as it could be. Green politics offers the policies and strategies for achieving that vision, founded as it is in the devolvement of power to local communities and the development of sustainable local economies.

Headingley needs a local Town Council so that its future development is in the hands of residents. Currently there is much talk about ‘Green Policies’ from other parties – but little action. Our recycling bins are not emptied, cycling provision is a joke, traffic congestion continues to grow and we still have to wait for a government decision on the ‘supertram’ and green spaces are disappearing rapidly.

Headingley Green Party does not support:

  • PFI funding of public services – e.g. Shire Oak Woodcraft Folk have been forced out of their meeting place in Spring Bank School as a consequence of PFI rebuild;

  • Expansion of Leeds-Bradford Airport – councillors have been discussing the short term benefits of expansion in air travel without considering the costs to the environment and local residents;

  • 24 hour licensing for pubs in residential areas – the health of young people and peaceful existence of families is put at risk by binge drinking;

  • Unregulated landlordism – over-expansion of houses in multiple occupancy, Greens would require ALL landlords to be registered

Nationally, the Green Party is working for:

  • The future of the planet – protecting everyone’s local environment;

  • A peaceful world – peace education, fair trade and conflict resolution;

  • Sustainable economics – local food production and resisting globalisation;

  • Clean air, safe environment – preventing the domination of urban spaces by the car using Home Zones, traffic calming, road pricing and better public transport provision;

The Green Party is a growing electoral force. Leeds already has THREE Green Councillors who are making a real difference. Use your vote to help make Leeds an even greener city.
