Don’t just look at the big parties and switch off
There are elected British Greens already making a difference at all levels from parish council to the European Parliament. We are offering you a well-qualified and passionate candidate to bring that difference to Westminster! In Leeds NW, local people are desperate for more control – over planning, licensing, the economy, the food they eat and the schools and hospitals they have available to them. Greens believe in local democracy – in people getting involved in their communities. We will encourage the spread of community and neighbourhood councils. We will provide a real alternative to the short-term self-interests of the major parties. We will provide: Make a real difference – Make the World of Difference |

Services where People matter
Greens want to turn schools into places where teachers can help children develop their whole potential, not just pass endless tests. We will place our trust in the professionalism of teachers. Greens want to create a public transport network that makes people want to leave their cars at home – so we can free our towns and cities from pollution and traffic. We will create home zones in safer streets and encourage the use of car sharing and car pooling schemes. Greens oppose using private finance to build our schools, hospitals and railways where the job can be done better and more cheaply with public money. Farming the work out to big business just because it makes the governments’ accounts look better is a fiddle. We will bring public services and assets into the control of local communities. |

Dear voter,
Always environmentally concerned, I was for many years an active member of the Labour Party, and served as a Leeds City Councillor from 1990 to 2002. I believed then that the best was to influence how the future developed was through an established party, and having left wing views could only belong to the Labour Party. Within the Labour Group I worked on issues that were on the green agenda – waste collection, recycling and disposal; provision of good housing; peace activities and peace education; opposition to nuclear power and weapons; green purchasing. I persuaded the Labour Group to oppose waste incineration in the city. I was also involved in the full range of issues that concerned people in the city, and this has influenced my realist approach to Green politics. In the end I could not defend the activities of the new government, and the illegal invasion of Iraq was for me the issue that saw my move to the Green Party. Green politics is not only concerned with the issues of the environment. It is concerned with every issue that affects people, but sees it from a green perspective – sustainable communities, a sustainable quality of life, a sustainable future. The concerns are no narrower that those of other parties, the principles are stronger. Martin Hemingway |

![]() A Green Future We all want to leave future generations a better world, but climate change could mean that they face disaster. Greens want tough action now to cut pollution. Britain should take a lead in seeking fair and lasting solutions to this global problem. Greens want governments to recognise people’s deep distrust of unhealthy food products. We will keep crops GM-free; promote local organic and compassionate farming, fair trade products and discourage cash crops in favour of sustainable and broadly based farming practices. |

Tony Blair took Britain to war on false pretences. It’s not just a matter of judgement; it’s a question of trust. Greens believe in building a safer, more stable world by tackling its root problems; poverty, hunger and oppression. We will remove the costly and unnecessary threat of UK nuclear weapons, cancel developing countries’ debt and provide real ‘no strings’ aid for communities in areas of the world seeking to avoid conflict and refugee crises. |
