Your GREEN PARTY candidate for Headingley ward |
Lesley Jeffries - is active in the local community, through organisations such as Headingley Network, and is a founding director of Headingley Development Trust. As a lecturer in Higher Education, and parent of two students, she is acutely aware of the funding crisis in this sector, and the problems of debt facing today's graduates. Leeds HMO (Houses of Multiple Occupancy) Lobby invited all of the Council Candidates in Headingley Ward in the forthcoming local elections to comment on the issue of concentrations of shared housing in Headingley - Headingley and Kirkstall CND did the same, asking for statements on Peace and COnflict Resolution - Lesley's statements can be found here. |

Putting people and the environment first. This means: · Investing in renewable energy and not nuclear power. · Investing in real peace and security. No replacement for Trident. Abolish nuclear weapons. · Non-aggressive foreign policies. No more wars like Iraq in our name. · Promoting understanding and trust between different communities in Britain. · Supporting youth organisations such as the Woodcraft Folk, which can bring young people from different backgrounds together. |

Worried about climate change … too much traffic … profits

Locally, The Green Party Stands for |
Community · We mourn the loss of so many local primary schools, which makes it harder to re-build a balanced community. · We support the idea of a Town Council for Headingley and Weetwood, to re-engage people with their elected representatives. · We support initiatives to spread the student population across the city. We don’t believe that students wish to live in a ghetto and we think Leeds should bite the bullet and register ALL landlords, as it has the right to do. People · We want to see pedestrians put first and cycling made safer. Developing wider, safer pavements and stopping vehicles from parking on pedestrian footways should be a priority. · We welcome the new Headingley Development Trust as a way of supporting small businesses, particularly social enterprises, in the area. We support the Trust’s bid to use Headingley Primary School as a centre for community renewal for Headingley and Weetwood · Energy efficient, warm, affordable housing for everyone. Environment · Leeds and Bradford should not be seeking to sell off the airport, to make the cities a fast buck. This will lead to inevitable expansion. Whether we like it or not, cheap flights = environmental disaster! · Leeds needs an integrated transport policy – fast. Now that supertram has gone, we need efficient buses and trains, and road-pricing. ·
We would like to see car pooling schemes encouraged. Let us learn to be minimal car users, not car owners. |
