VOTE GREEN, VOTE:

Hello,

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when faced with issues like climate change but it is not too late to leave our children world they deserve.  I joined the Green Party because it promotes and implements the common sense changes needed to avert this threat.  And the good news is that by acting together against climate change we can improve our quality of life at the same time

I joined the Green Party because I care about the environment but we don’t just campaign about green issues!  The Greens support free prescriptions and NHS dentistry. We are campaigning for a citizen’s pension, regardless of savings, and linked to earnings not inflation.

Why vote for me? I care passionately about Leeds and am a local resident, living in Headingley with my wife and daughter.  My employment involves influencing government policy for education and training and I have considerable political experience I can use to represent you as your ward Councillor.

There is no point in despairing about things we have the power to change. Getting a Green perspective and a Green vote onto the Council can make a big difference.

What would a Green Party Councillor work towards?

The items on this page are taken from the Headingley Green Manifesto and show how Green politics would improve life in the ward.

Local Power and a balanced population

Leeds City Council decided that the balance of the population had shifted too far towards students when students became 60 per cent of the population of Headingley and therefore implemented the Area of Student Housing Restraint Policy. This policy was overruled by central government bureaucrats with no understanding of the local area. This is just one example of why powers should be held locally. Green Councillors campaign for power to be devolved to local authorities and work for the creation of parish councils below this level.

Green spaces
Access to Green Spaces has been shown to be good for our mental health as well as our physical health.  They are also important for children and adults to have places to play. A Green councillor will fight to save green spaces in the city for community use

Local food
Food which is grown locally supports local farmers, has a lower carbon footprint and tastes better too.  A Green Councillor will support and encourage the farmers’ market, co-operative schemes and shops which promote local goods.

Waste and Recycling
The Lib Dem/Tory administration is pursuing a policy of incinerating Leeds waste. This will cause local pollution and contribute to climate change.  It will also remove any incentive for the council to improve its rate of reuse, recycling and bio-waste. A Green Councillor will campaign for separate collections of different types of waste and its treatment through bio-waste as well as reductions in unnecessary packaging.

Transport
Public transport is crucial for many people to get to work and school and see friends and relatives as well as having a key role in reducing our environmental impact. The Supertram may be dead and buried, but there’s no reason we can’t get the basics right. A Green Councillor will campaign for bus shelters and timetable information at every stop and a reliable service including Sundays and Bank Holidays. I will fight for a road system which made cycling safe and enjoyable and call for road maintenance to be a higher priority. I will also support residents who wish to lower the speed of traffic on their roads or close them to cars altogether.

Crime and Policing
The Green Party believes in supporting relationships between the police and the local community and a Green Councillor will engage with the police to encourage this.  In the longer term Greens would like to see a local police station.
